Ben Goes to College

This weekend was our alma mater - Lehigh University's - annual rivalry football game verses Lafayette College. We have made it a tradition to go back up to Bethlehem, PA for the festivities every year to catch up with some of our college friends. It's sort of neat, too, because all of our college friends are married to each other so we all are alumni of the university and now it's become even more fun to see everyone since many of us have children at this point.

We headed up early yesterday morning and met up with 4 other couples at Lehigh's Goodman Stadium for pre-game tailgates. It was cold but not as cold as it has been some other years so it was a good day. So, we fired up the grills, broke out the snacks and hot beverages early and had a great time visiting with each other.

Here we are at our tailgate spot on the alumni side of the stadium. Luckily my ski jacket still fits around my 22 week pregnant belly or else I would have had another thing coming to me since we realized yesterday morning that all of our hats, gloves and scarves are in storage, thanks to our impending (and largely stalled) move. Yikes, at least we had some for the baby but it actually turned out to not be too bad since the grills and hot drinks helped to warm us up.

Tim, Andrea and 14-month-old Amelia McGeary. Andrew was roomates with Tim in college and I was roomates with Andrea senior year. Ben and Amelia were the oldest kids in our party yesterday so they had a fun time playing with each other.

Ray, Missy and 6-month-old Jonathan Greenley. Andrew and Ray roomed together for a year in college and now work together and Missy and I also lived together senior year of college (with Andrea) and we also rented an apartment in NJ for the year before I got married.

Phil and Judi Schoen, our friends who came all the way down from Mahopac, NY for the big day.

Lastly, our friends Jim, Jenn and 10-month-old Nathaniel Birdsall who came all the way from Switzerland for the events. Wow, talk about school spirit!

So, there you have it - a big group of engineering/mathematics/business geeks having a good time!

Ben really took to the idea of tailgates and particularly enjoyed the hot chocolate that I mixed in with his lunch-time cup of milk, the football cookies that Andrea made and...being able to help himself to chips at the food station. Class of 2028, get ready for Ben Martin!

Ben's into "ball" lately and it's become one of his favorite things to say and point out. We told him the entire car ride up that we were going to a football game and he kept saying " -oot ball." Here he is mesmerized by two guys (unfortunately, I think Lafayette alumni) having a catch.

And here he gives soccer a try for himself. This was very amusing, apparently, as it kept him occupied for more than a few minutes.

Ben and Amelia had fun playing with the toys that we put out for them and were so cute all bundled up, trying to crawl and run around.

We did have one very funny incident that I unfortunately do not have a photo of :(. I took Ben for a walk through the parking lot to see all of the action when an adorable 3-year-old blonde named Samantha and her grandma approached us. Ben did his usual pickup line by calling her "baby" (we're trying to work on the difference between real babies and other children, especially ones older than he is!). She wears glasses that he found fascinating and she apparently liked the velcro on his coat, so they leaned in close towards each other to check these accessories out, when all of a sudden Ben planted a big, wet, slimy kiss on her lips! He's into kissing lately and gives me and Andrew full-mouth wet smooches whenever he feels inclined. So, I guess he decided it was okay to kiss his new friend too! So, at just shy of 20 months old, our son has had his first kiss with an older blonde - lol!

Tyler's 3rd Birthday Party

Today we went to Tyler's 3rd birthday party and Ben had such a good time celebrating with one of his best friends. The theme was bugs and the whole party centered around different types of Ben (and Tyler's!) favorite creepy crawlers.

Here is Tyler with his birthday dirt pudding dessert, filled with none other than gummy worms.

Yum, Ben loved the dessert and didn't hesitate to ask for "more" when he finished his first bowlful.

Everyone got to make balloon bugs at the party using markers, glue, tissue paper and pipe cleaners. Ben was more into the markers than the actual craft but he always has a fun time doing crafty things regardless.

Of course present time was the highlight of the day for the kids. Here they all help Tyler enjoy his new gifts, looking on with longing, wishing it were their own birthdays!
Ben liked Tyler's new dinosaur set that he got and immediately moved to the front row to get a better look as Tyler opened it.
Here some of the kids look on as Tyler's mom Amy opened Ben's gift to Tyler - a tic-tac-toe beanbag toss. It's amazing how focused they can all become when it really matters!
